Slavery- Imagine That Not All Counted As Dead Are Gone

Slavery was a tragedy, an abomination that continues to haunt us. Unbelievably, millions of Africans did not reach the Americas as slaves but suffered and perished during the horrors of the Middle Passage.

What if it was not their last journey?

Imagine that the bravest souls found freedom in a paradise beneath the ocean and joined others who chose to die rather than live through the hell of human bondage.

Imagine that these souls sent us a King.

Queen Mother is the story of Nala, an unloved orphan whose destiny and quest for love takes her from the horrors of the Middle Passage to beauty, wisdom and royalty in The Kingdom.

Cheer for Nala as she faces her spoiled and jealous cousin, Shazila, her fearful Uncle Father and the monstrous kidnapper, Red Beard. Fall in love with her Nala’s son, Matai, and be uplifted and encouraged by the Seven Lessons told by the wise teachers of The Kingdom.

Queen Mother is a magical blend of history and fiction with a touch of fantasy. It gives readers a new, proud history and an exciting, hopeful future.

Queen Mother edition by Angela Norton Tyler Literature Fiction eBooks

The author does a remarkable job of transporting her readers back to Africa by expertly capturing the daily existence and culture of its people. Then her readers are taken on a harrowing journey as Nala's determined attempt to be reunited with her lover and father of her unborn child is shockingly upended after she is captured and sold into slavery. The vividness of the brutality that follows will bring tears to your eyes as you come to better understand the utter lack of humanity that transpired during this time, especially during the Middle Passage. Thankfully, the story takes a positive turn into fantasy and hope as Nala winds up in the Kingdom where her son, who was suppose to be a future king, prepares to become the ruler of a different kind. But that is where the author leaves you wanting more as the book ends in cliff-hanger fashion. I can't wait to read the next installment of this series.

This book from stylistic standpoint reminded me of another book I recently read. Stephen King's "11/22/63" took the historical event of President John F. Kennedy being assassinated and blended it with fantasy to create a gripping page-turner. Angela has pulled off a similar feat of bringing a college professor's attention to historical detail with masterful story-telling.

I strongly encourage any readers of this review to immediately purchase the book. You won't regret it and will want to encourage others to do the same.

Queen Mother edition by Angela Norton Tyler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A great read. It flowed nicely. Wish it could've been a little longer. Real read more of this authors work.
It was an interesting read until the fantasy part was added. I felt it flowed well but then it took another direction, which made it not so appealing
"Queen Mother" is a spiritual tale with woven historical facts.... "Queen Mother" tells our story from what we already know and from a place, where we hope to know... It's our truths and the truth is Spirits are being born everyday!
I have fallen in love with Angela Norton Tyler's
"Queen Mother", just as I did for J.California Cooper's "Some Soul To Keep" and
Bertice Berry's "Redemption Song"!
Angela is a great storyteller. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down, I loved the historical emphasis, as well as the spiritual. Suppose there was another world where slaves escaped to during the "middle passage"; a world governed by divine law, where the pain of the past is reconciled and released. If such a world existed, perhaps, we can then find peace in knowing that many of our ancestors, not only regained their lives, but were able to live fully and authentically.
I wasn't ready to read another painful story about the transatlantic slave trade and the middle passage. This book, though filled with fantasy, was just what I needed. The mysticism reminded me of African proverbs and fables. I gave it a 4 as I wanted more details in the second part of the story.
This was absolutely the greatest book. I will read the seven lessons to my 3 year old as bedtime stories. It will make you laugh and cry. Angela please continue to write books. I love just because of what you wrote
I enjoyed the journey of Queen Mother, largely because it did not travel the same old, timeworn path of the horrors of slavery. Instead, it offers an uplifting message of the people taken from Africa; of determination, perseverance, knowledge and power, in a fairytale-like form. Angela Norton Tyler's use of imagery is evocative, and her reader is swept up into the life of Mala, and later her son Matai. Lessons abound in this novel, which deserves to be read again and again. Just imagine if it were true...
