I am, admittedly, not a fan of poetry, but a friend convinced me to read this book. Her style is direct and intimate. I almost feel like I have that "come see what's behind this door" relationship with her just from reading her poetry. The poems are short, quick, easy to read, but stick with you long afterwards. Move over Sylvia Plath.

Words Meant to be Spoken eBook Courtney Birst Reviews

I downloaded and read this book in one evening after hearing about it from a friend and meeting the author. I loved her poems and wanted more. Her words are profound, but not mysterious or obscure. She wants to be understood and she succeeds in a beautiful way. She creates in her poetry a kinship which I feel and enjoy. I look forward to her next book.
When I discovered an old first of mine had published her first book, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed and it came at just the right time. It was very refreshing to read poems of lost love and know I'm not alone in my current journey overcoming what could have been. It gave me a renewed sense I found it before and it will come again though it still may not be for forever. We just have to enjoy each day as it comes and live it as though it could be our last. Thank you so much Courtney for putting words to thoughts and feelings that sometimes are hard to find!
It is all too easy to be smitten with this book with its heartbreakingly frank language and fearless trek through fraught emotional territory. For such a small book, it has so much to say. It uses plain speech and simple dialogues to illustrate tiny but profound epiphanies. It is - as they say - "not your mothers" book of poetry but the book of poetry you dole out to your friends who are finding their own way, seeking their own epiphanies. The writing is concise but the sentiment palpable. You will taste your way through "Mango" and sigh the defeating sigh of heartache in "We Need to Talk". You will find yourself drawn to reread the book as lines such as "...a deep contrast to the sweet lithe of her southern voice dancing across the words " (of "Anne Caston") beg your subconscious to be read again. You will love this book!
I am constantly on the lookout for new poetry and gave this book a shot. This book has now definitely become one of my favorites. It's fresh, relatable, and a quick, satisfying read.
What a great read! Courtney really makes poetry interesting, exciting, and fun. It is an easy read and even if you don't consider yourself a poetry fan this book could just be the one that changes that for you!
I was really impressed with this collection of poetry. I was hooked from the very first poem, which happens to share its title with my favorite fruit of all time! Her style is easy to read, but moving and (for me, at least), very easy to relate to. Here's to hoping this is the first of many poetry collections from Courtney Birst!
This is a terrific little debut collection. Birst's poetry is colorful, quirky, frank, intimate, and bursting with flavor. Simply "delicious"! Can't wait for Vol2.
